How to Install a Magnetic-Mount Remote Spotlight Without Drilling

BOWEN LIGHTING · Installation guide

A magnetic-mount spotlight is the only roof light you can install in a parking lot with no tools and remove just as fast. Here's the full process, start to finish — most people are done in under 30 minutes.

What you'll need

No drill, no brackets, no sealant. That's the point.

Step 1 — Pick the spot

Magnets need flat ferrous steel. The center of the roof is the classic position: highest point, 360° of useful aim. On trucks, the A-pillar area (either side of the windshield) is popular for driver-side control of the beam.

Two surfaces to avoid: aluminum or composite roofs (magnets won't stick — check with a fridge magnet first) and heavily curved or ribbed panels, where the magnetic feet can't sit flat. Less contact area means less holding force.

Step 2 — Clean the surface

Wipe the mounting area clean. Grit trapped under a magnetic foot will micro-scratch paint over time, and a dusty surface reduces grip. Thirty seconds with a cloth prevents both.

Step 3 — Set the unit down

Place the base so both magnetic feet sit fully flat, then give it a firm push-test sideways. It should feel planted, not sliding. If it rocks, the surface is too curved — move it.

Step 4 — Wire the power

The gimbal runs on DC 12–24V, so it works on standard cars, trucks, and 24V rigs alike. Route the cable through a door seal or window gap — no holes needed — and connect to your fused 12V/24V feed. Keep the cable clear of the pan mechanism: the head rotates 270° horizontally, and a cable draped across its path will snag.

Step 5 — Power the remote and test

Drop 2 × AAA batteries into the remote. From the driver's seat, try the joystick: pan the head through its full 270° sweep and tilt through the 65–155° range. The 433MHz link is rated for 100m+, so anywhere inside or near the vehicle is well within range. One remote can drive up to 4 gimbal units if you expand later.

Step 6 — Aim and lock your working angles

Park facing a wall or open ground at night and sweep the beam to learn the joystick feel. Note where the tilt limits sit — you want to know the edges before you're on a dark trail. The housing is IP65 sealed against dust and water jets, so rain and car washes are non-events.

Three things people get wrong

Install-ready by design.
The BOWEN LIGHTING gimbal uses twin magnetic feet, runs on 12–24V, and pairs with a 100m+ remote — roof on in minutes, zero drilling.
